Larkin and Lacey Started the Frontera Fund to Defend the Defenseless

The Frontera Fund was founded by two colleagues from the media, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey. The two also founded the Village Voice Media, which was responsible for their run-in with the powers that be and their being cast into the limelight.

The village voice was an alternative news instrument in the Phoenix area of Arizona. The newspaper led to their arrest by Joe Arpaio for doing what they knew best and what the media is meant to do; highlighting events of interest within the community.

The Frontera Fund is a direct product of justice that Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were granted by the Arizona courts after they sued the former County Sheriff for wrongful arrest.

Larkin and Lacey were awarded a $ 3.3 million. They decided to channel the cash to the launching of an organization that would fight for the rights of immigrants and minorities in society, and in Arizona in particular.

The Border Angels

Incidents of authorities trampling on the rights of minorities are commonplace in society. Consequently, organizations such as the Frontera Fund are formed to counter the damaging repercussions of such regimes. The Border Angels is an organization that was started with objectives that are similar to those of the Frontera Fund. Learn more about Larkin and Lacey: http://www.laceyandlarkinfronterafund.org/about-lacey-larkin-frontera-fund/michael-lacey/ and http://james-larkin.com/

Border Angels was started by Enrique Morones. Its primary focus is the issue of migrant rights. The organization is based in San Diego. It also seeks to prevent immigrant deaths that can be avoided along the border. Border Angels was started in 1986.

Desert Outreach

Border Angels is also active in community social development. It has created awareness programs that seek to enlighten immigrants and other minorities on their rights as provided for in the American constitution. Border Angels also travel to remote places where immigrants cross the border.

They place water-cans along the routes where the immigrants pass. The staff at the organization are also afforded visits to the border between the US and Mexico so that they learn some history of that border and the policy that governs it.

The organization has a range of outreach activities including the Day Labour Outreach program. They also provide free legal support to the immigrants. The central objective of the border Angels is to restore truth, justice, and freedom for immigrants. Read more: Michael Lacey | Twitter and Michael Lacey | LinkedIn

In 2014, Border Angels were proactively involved in solving the immigrant crisis that involved unaccompanied children moving from Central America and trying to find their way into the USA. In that crisis, the organization managed to extend warmth and love to the children by buying them toys, food, and clothes.

The officials of the organization also offered a counter strategy to the demonstrators that were protesting against the entrance of the immigrants who were seeking documentation to stay on in the US.

American Civil Liberties Union

The American Civil Liberties Union is yet another organization that offers services to the minorities. It was formed way back in 1959. It is, perhaps one of the oldest such organizations in the US. Arizona has been notorious with immigrants.

The American Civil Liberties in Arizona has successfully rebutted the efforts to change laws that targeted immigrants and other minorities. One of the landmark cases was the 1960 quashing of a law that had banned interracial marriages. Thus, Lakin and Lacey are not alone in the fight against impunity, and in defending the rights of immigrants and minorities.

Tony Petrello Seizes On Shale, Takes Nabors Industries To The Next Level

Since joining Nabors Industries in 1991, Tony Petrello has proven to be the most successful executive in the company’s history. Early on, Petrello decided to refocus the company’s efforts on more high-tech areas. This culminated in the eventual development of some of the most complex and high-tech drilling equipment that the industry had ever seen. Eventually, Petrello’s big bet on technology would pay off when the Bakken Shale formation in North Dakota became one of the largest oil plays in the history of the United States.

When Tony Petrello first came on board with Nabors Industries, the company was in tatters. The once-great company had been mismanaged for more than two decades, leaving it in a state of almost total insolvency. As one of the top tax attorneys with leading law firm Baker McKenzie, Petrello was charged with working out a solution that would allow it to continue on as a going concern and become profitable again. At that time, the Nabors Industries executives were looking for somebody who could lead the company into the future. The young Petrello appeared to be someone who may be able to do the job.

The executive team eventually hired Petrello as a junior-level executive. But throughout the 90s, he was able to work his way up the ranks, eventually becoming the chief operating officer of the firm. It was during this time that Petrello decided to invest heavily in the development of new directional drilling equipment that heavily relied on both automation and algorithm optimization in order to efficiently and effectively extract the hard-oil reserves that were stuck in America’s shale formations.

This effort eventually led to the development of both the ROCKIT performance drilling software and the Modular Offshore Dynamic Series, two of the most advanced drilling technologies that have ever been produced. As the first entrant into the directional drilling space in North America, Petrello gave Nabors Industries a head start that the company has never relinquished. Today, Nabors Industries is the single largest supplier of directional drilling equipment in the world. And it has been the dominant provider of all directional drilling equipment in the extraction of North American shale resources for the better part of two decades.

All of this activity has driven the book value of the firm from $1 million all the way to $17 billion. At the same time, Nabors Industries has become the single largest lessor of directional drilling equipment and land-based oil plays anywhere in the world.

Rocketship Education’s Unique Mission

How can American schools be better? Well, there’s no simple answer. After all, the issues that plague so many schools in this country are complicated and nuanced. Solving them isn’t easy, but one group of charter schools is taking an important step. Rocketship Education, an organization of charter schools in some underserved parts of the country, is pushing forth a new emphasis on the start of the new year. With the start of 2018, Rocketship Education and its educators are doing their best to help students start the new year off right. When students fall behind in their coursework, their engagement drops like a rock. This makes sense. After all, what is more discouraging than feeling like catching up is impossible? Rocketship Education is trying to guide students back into control by helping them develop new study strategies, including time management. By engaging students, this process will help in the long run. When students are actively involved in their own education process, they work harder, think harder, and practice harder. The net result is certainly good, and Rocketship is doing a great thing by giving their students another chance to show off their talents and abilities.

Rocketship Education is a group of charter schools that works in poorer parts of the country. Rocketship has schools in the Bay Area, Milwaukee, Washington D.C, and Nashville. The organization’s vision, as listed on their official site, is to eliminate the “achievement gap.” While this is an ambitious task, Rocketship intends to help lower this gap by offering education that taps into the talents and, sometimes hidden, abilities of students in lower-income areas. By illuminating students’ individualities and giving them a chance to use creative problem solving and authentic thinking, Rocketship provides a genuinely unique educational experience to those who attend. But Rocketship also embraces the practical, and their belief is that Rocketship Schools are a sustainable educational model that will make a significant impact in lower-income areas. Rocketship aims towards a community-wide effort, and they have a clear dedication to involving parents in the education process. Rocketship desires a holistic, community effort towards bettering youth, and so far, they are succeeding.

Larkin & Lacey Recount Their Decade-Long Feud Against Arpaio Following His Pardon

In October of 2017, in an Arizona courthouse, the presidential pardon of former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio was formally validated by District Judge Susan Bolton. Trump pardoned Arpaio only a few weeks before Arpaio would have been sentenced for his crimes.

The former sheriff was convicted for criminal contempt of court earlier that year after ignoring a federal judge’s order following a lawsuit in 2007. The lawsuit was related to Arpaio’s practice of racially profiling Latinos in search of illegal immigrants.

A Long-Standing Rivalry Between Arpaio and the Press

Judge Bolton’s validation of the pardon has put an abrupt close to the long battle against Arpaio’s atrocities. However, perhaps Arpaio’s greatest blunder was his attempt to silence the press. Read more: Jim Larkin | Crunchbase and Jim Larkin | Angel.co

In 2007, he arrested the co-owners of the Phoenix New Times, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey. Recently, Lacey offered his own comments on the pardoning of Arpaio by Trump.

“This is the perfect marriage of two corrupt individuals,” Lacey said. He then went on to add a brief appraisal of Arpaio himself. “This is a sheriff who advertised torture and racism. God, look at the grim parade of corpses and mutilated bodies that came out of that jail of his.”

Larkin and Lacey Speak Out Against Arpaio

There were few people who provided as much of a pain in Arpaio’s side as Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey. The pair spent years outing Arpaio’s injustices and covering his schemes in detail via the Phoenix New Times.

However, their determination to see Arpaio face justice didn’t exactly go over well with the former sheriff himself.

As the pair continued to report on Arpaio’s blatant disregard for both the law and human decency, Arpaio responded by simply banning them from his press conferences.

Later on, he even began outright ignoring requests by the paper for county records, and, eventually, he began threatening their reporters with arrest. However, the two journalists never thought that he’d follow through on those threats.

Larkin and Lacey Land Behind Arpaio’s Bars

Larkin and Lacey had underestimated Arpaio’s gall. After one too many exposures of Arpaio’s atrocities, he had the two journalists arrested in the dead of night, by plainclothes goons. They were stuffed into unmarked cars bearing Mexican plates and shuttled off to Arpaio’s cells.

The public, however, didn’t take this sitting down. They responded viciously to the arrests, calling for the release of Larkin and Lacey. Less than 24 hours after they were arrested, the pair were set free. Andrew Thomas, a strong ally of Arpaio, was forced to announce that the case had been closed and that the arrests were improper.

Shortly after the incident, Larkin and Lacey opted to sue the county. After several years of legal wrangling, the pair settled for a sum of $3.75 million.

Using those funds, they created the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, which acts as a provider of grants to migrant-rights organizations in the state of Arizona. Despite Arpaio’s pardon, they continue to fight against his atrocities, and won’t stop until he’s behind the same bars they were shuttled to over a decade ago.

Larkin & Lacey

Racial profiling is not something that Sheriff Arpaio has introduced; it’s an old phenomena that has been around since the beginning of human civilization. In American history, the people who have suffered most from this have been people who do not appear to be of pure European heritage.

Different groups and admixtures of non-Europeans have suffered to different extents. Some groups are thought of as “model minorities” who are “desirable” to live around. Others are thought of being less “desirable”–less attractive and more inferior. In the past, the groups who are now “model minorities” never used to be “model minorities.”

They used to be demonized by the media and various organizations. However, as time went on, certain model minorities were demonized less and eventually prospered in American society. Latino people make up a minority, though they are not a model minority. As a result, prejudice and racism is directed at them like a laser beam.

For many Hispanics, this laser beam of prejudice and racism took the form of Sheriff Arpaio. Like a racist hawk, he watched the roads, trying to see which Hispanics he could harass next.

The people who worked under his orders did the same. What ended up happening was that legal citizens were falsely accused as being border jumpers and detained until proven innocent. It must have been extremely embarrassing and insulting to be profiled as an illegal immigrant on the basis of having brown skin and dark features.

It was a matter of time before Arpaio got caught for his unfair crimes. U.S. District Court Judge Snow issued the man an order that required him to quit the prejudice.

Arpaio had a chance to stop doing what he was doing and to make amends. Instead of making amends, he spent about two more loathsome years doing the same thing. Learn more about Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey: http://www.laceyandlarkinfronterafund.org/about-lacey-larkin-frontera-fund/jim-larkin/ and http://james-larkin.com/about/

He didn’t get too far by doing that. The courts realized that he wasn’t listening to their orders, and they didn’t buy the excuse that he gave for utterly refusing to follow what they had told him to do. As a result, Susan Bolton, a judge, took the initiative to lay a charge of criminal contempt upon him.

A jail sentence could have really been devastating to Sheriff Arpaio’s life because he is already so advanced in years. If he received any length of jail-time, especially a sentence close to ten or fifteen years, that could have technically been a life sentence.

Think about it: He has lived for 85 years. If he got a jail sentence of about ten or fifteen years, he might have been forced to live in jail into his 90s and 100s!

Well, the pardon was good for Sheriff Arpaio and his family. However, a lot people felt that the justice system had failed. Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were major opponents of Sheriff Arpaio’s pardon.

Their opposition to the loathly man is not a shocker, considering how he tried to instill fear into them so that they wouldn’t utilize their First Amendment rights to write against him.
